Alpenglow in the High Sierra

A painting of Alpenglow in the Sierra Nevada California

Alpenglow

Alpenglow is an optical phenomenon that is actually quite rare.  You see it when the sun is just below the horizon, but there is enough moisture in the air to refract the light and make a a red glowing band on the horizon opposite the sun. It illuminates the peaks and crags of high places like the Sierra, the Rockies, the Himalayas and the Alps.

Sometimes you just see the mountains glowing in the last gaze of the sun as it sets, and we might cal that Alpenglow because, well, the name is just so pretty.

Whatever you call it, it’s a mesmerizing sight on clear mornings and evenings when the first or last light of the day kisses the mountains, transforming them into ethereal masterpieces. I’ve seen it a couple of times in the Sierra Nevada and once in the Trinity Alps. Nature always amazes me with its beauty.

In this tiny watercolor, I’ve tried to capture the essence of the moment so you can see it too, and feel the warmth of its glow and the peace that it brings.

It's my way of sharing this enchanting experience with you, allowing you to connect with nature's beauty on a deeper level. DM me to find out how you can bring this home.
