Welcome to my nature-inspired studio

Margaret Sloan, nature artist and writer

I believe we all yearn for connection to the world of nature.
To the planet, to animals, to community, to each other. To ourselves.
My work forges those connections.

I’m a painter and a writer; a creator.

My work holds space where you can feel at home in the mystery and magic of the world, where you can connect with nature, animals, community. Through the stories I tell in images and words, I build a structure for the wholeness we are born with—our innate bond with substance and mystery.

I’ve lived from northern California to southern Mexico, and now reside in the Sierra Nevada. I am a certified California Naturalist and has a degree in plant science as well as in theatre arts. I honed my story telling skills at Sunset Magazine and the Calaveras County Arts Council. My biggest moment was winning a James Beard Award for writing about honeybees.

I studied life drawing at the Atelier of Classical Realism in Oakland, watercolor with Steve Curl, and landscape painting with Felicia Forte and Halcyon Teed.
