Summer Wave #2
One of my favorite lines of poetry is Psalm 107: “They that go down to the sea in ships, and occupy their business in great waters; These men see the works of the Lord, and his wonders in the deep.”
Big water is a mysterious realm, alive with currents, tides, waves that describe the depths below. It has fascinated humans since time immemorial. I think that is why we decorate our homes with things that remind us of the sea and coast. They bring a sense of wonder and beauty into our homes.
This painting was inspired by a sail on Lake Michigan on the Friends Goodwill, a reconstructed 19th-century sloop. They let me steer the boat briefly, and the moment I touched the heavy wooden tiller, I felt the life and energy in the water and boat. The water tugged and pushed the rudder, and the little boat responded, cutting through the currents, dancing through the waves.
