I love the John Day Fossil Beds National Monument in Central Oregon, where the earth’s past is revealed in multi-colored layers of sand, clay, and stone.

This painting shows the entrance to the monument, which seemed to me like a portal into another world, connecting the earth’s ancient history with the modern world.
